“I would always tell her where my hands were going to be, ‘Girl, I’m going to touch your thigh, then your chest.’ Pretty soon [Schilling] was like, ‘I don’t care where your hands are going to be, I trust you, touch me wherever the hell you want.’”

John thinking about Dorian’s “design”.
What do you do with it?
Anonymous asked: Hey love your blog. I was wondering, how self aware do you think Dorian is? While he is human like, they mention in the pilot to point out that he is mimicking humanity using a program called synthetic soul. Many of his responses to John seem automatic. Like they're a scripted encounter in a video game. But Dorian also exhibits very human responses to other "spontaneous" situations: almost "dying" or "executing" the sex droid. Is Dorian about to become "post human"? Or is he already self aware?
Hi and thank you! Glad you like it :)
And wow this is a very complex question! I wish I could answer it in a way that does the subject justice, but I’m afraid my English isn’t good enough to delve so deeply into philosophical (and also technical) great stuff like this. I’ll say something, but please let me apologize because the wording might be a little clumsy.
Well, so far I think that Dorian is indeed self-aware. I’d say, he defines himself as a person, a feeling individual, even though he knows that he’s different from the humans. He’s offended on a personal level when people treat him bad, he states that he’s afraid of death and that he wonders if anyone will remember him when he’s gone, and in the new promo for “Blood Brothers” he says that he wants to have his own place to live so he can have privacy and a place more comfortable than the android space for the MX’s. I don’t believe the need for an own apartment was actually coded in his base programming. I think they also said he’s programmed to have free will (in contrast to the MX units who don’t have true free will but only take orders). Dorian’s free will seems to be limited though - Like in that hostage situation, he can’t decide “No I won’t do it”, he HAS to do it because that’s what he was programmed to do. But I wonder if he even might be able to overcome these program commands one day. And what that would mean and bring with it.
I take it that his programs are very very complex and they can actually evolve independently. As Dorian learns and experiences different situations, his intelligent & dynamic programming is able to adjust. And while the “core” stays fixed (I guess), the sub-programs can probably be overwritten/rewritten by himself, if he decides that it would make sense to do so. He must be able to fill his programs and databases with new contents and probably even add new codings AKA enhance the base codings, to allow him to learn and grow from previous situations. And who knows, this could be a very fine line, because maybe it could happen that he will exceed the designers’ expectations, so that his A.I. actually obtains total independence. After all, Dorian strives for respect, acceptance and even independance already (even if his wishes are modest and harmless so far, for example being called by his name instead of “synthetic” or having a place for some privacy). But that’s just me going wild with my speculations; I don’t know if they will go there at all, but I definitely think it would be interesting!
